Jhongtong Old Street

The most bustling old street in Jingtong is located right at the exit of Jingtong Station. Apart from being an original Japanese-style wooden station, the area's unique attraction is the world's only sky lantern-shaped building, the "Jingtong Electronic Sky Lantern Museum," which combines the local sky lantern culture with the landscape and skyline. It stands like a lantern of blessings at the end of Jingtong Old Street, gently glowing and praying for blessings over Pingxi. Next to the old street, there are many wishing bamboo tubes and the "Railway Story Museum," a must-visit for railway enthusiasts. The museum sells wooden postcards, on which you can write your wishes and stamp them with a unique seal provided by the shop as a memento! In the past, Pingxi District thrived due to coal mining, but although all the mines have ceased operation today, the Jingtong Mining Life Museum, converted from the refurbished dormitories of Taiwan Railway employees, still stands to showcase the development history of Jingtong's mining industry. For food, you can try the special bento meals that the miners used to eat (packed in stainless steel boxes), the Taiwanese home-style dish of chicken rolls (made by deep-frying pork wrapped in tofu skin), and savor the Carbon Field Coffee.
