Located in Yuanli's Xiping Village, Xin雕居 (Heart Carving Residence) is a slate house close to the sea, and was the workplace of the late artist, Chen Jionghui. Chen was a recipient of the Architectural Commission's Xinchuan Award, and in 1973, he established the Shandi Woodcarving Studio. With sharp chisels and heavy mallets, Chen brought out the raw life of wood, and every stroke of his brush revealed the traditional artistic style of the indigenous people. The stone carvings at the entrance of the Heart Carving Residence fully express the rustic charm, and the walls made of large stones shaped like two hundred-step snakes also showcase the essence of primitive art. The slate pillars to the right of the entrance, the primitive pavilion on the left, and the garden landscape filled with primitive wooden mortars add to the ancient charm of the Heart Carving Residence. Inside, the residence displays works by Chen and his apprentices. Chen's works were deeply influenced by the cultures of the Paiwan and Rukai tribes, and primarily feature humans, snakes, deer, and pigs as creative themes. His carving techniques and work shapes are unique, removing practical purposes and strengthening artistic characteristics, making them worth exploring.
