The two-story Western-style building with a white exterior and Greek columns has a style similar to American Southern Colonial. It has served as the residences of several U.S. Ambassadors including Chin, Righter, and Curtk. The building ceased operation when the last Ambassador left Taiwan following the severance of diplomatic relations between ROC and the U.S. in 1979. The abandoned building stood vacant for many years until the Ministry of the Interior designated it as a Third Grade Historic Site on February 20, 1997. The Taipei City Government commissioned the Taiwan Movie and Culture Association to manage the property; it was re-opened as a movie and cultural center called “The Light Point Taipei” or “Taipei’s Light Point”. It features an 88-seat movie theater called “The Light Point” . “The Light Point. Red Balloon” is a movie salon offering light refreshments with a seating capacity of around 50. The salon space is open to the public until 5:00 p.m. daily. The Veranda Art Gallery features works created by various artists. A multi-functioning arts and culture hall with 25 pings of space can accommodate around 60 people. It has a collection of movie-related books; and can host lectures, symposia, and tea parties. “The Light Point. Coffee Time” is a café situated by the old tree on the premises; “The Light Point. Life” is a specialty bookstore focusing on the subjects of movies and cities. The Light Point Taipei has brought a wonderful cinematic ambience to the city of Taipei.
