In April 1907, the Taiwan Sugar Co., Ltd. acquired the Taito Sugar Co., Ltd. and converted it into the Taiwan Sugar Co., Ltd. Ahou Branch Factory, located in Kueilai Village, Ahou Prefecture. Construction of the factory was completed in November, and sugar production began. After the war, in 1950, it was rebuilt as the Pingtung Sugar Refinery of the Taiwan Sugar Corporation, which it remains today. During the heyday of the sugar industry, 75% of the nation’s foreign-exchange earnings came from sugar production, with the Pingtung Sugar Refinery yielding the highest output. The Ahou Sugar Refinery, following the Qiaozitou Sugar Refinery during the Japanese colonial period, became the headquarters of the Taiwan Sugar Co., Ltd. The refinery’s construction witnessed the rise of Pingtung City and established Pingtung as the core of the Pingtung Plain.
