Amidst the concrete jungle where skylines are replaced by skyscrapers, have you kept up with the wellness trend of visiting mountains and immersing yourself in nature? Located west of the Stone Gate Reservoir, Zishan Mountain (also known as Xiaozhuke Mountain) is one of Taiwan’s 100 Short Peaks with an altitude of 551 meters. It boasts breathtaking views of the Stone Gate Reservoir, Longtan and Dakeshui cityscapes, and even offers a chance to spot Taipei 101! Two popular hiking routes can help you break free from conventional perceptions and unlock a broader perspective.
Start your journey at Zishanshan Forest Park's northern trailhead from Minzhi Road via the arched entrance gate. The initial section follows a wilderness trail; on weekends, numerous vendors gather to sell hiking poles, snacks, and mountain produce. The path features gentle slopes, perfect for strolling leisurely among the acacia forest, Chinese bellflower trees, and ferns, while also building up strength for the challenging Climber’s Slope ahead. Though only 400 meters long, the Climber’s Slope rises nearly 200 meters, requiring ropes to aid hikers. The alternative route, Jingchun Trail, is comparatively easier. Reaching the trail’s peak, you’ll enjoy panoramic vistas of the dam, instantly relieving the fatigue with excitement. After a brief rest, head directly towards Taiping Mountain at an elevated 535 meters. The summit features a communications tower, making it possible to conquer two peaks in a day for a highly satisfying hiking experience!
Another hiking option is the Guanyin Statue Trail near the Labor Recreation Center of Zishan Mountain. The smooth asphalt path lined with artistic statues and dinosaur models creates a unique aesthetic contrast, drawing attention from travelers. The gradual 400-meter climb leads to a scenic observation platform where directional markers highlight landmarks to the east, west, and north. An 8-meter-long Guanyin statue stands beside the platform, its elegant white form quietly observing hikers. Continuing onwards to the "Peach Blossom Paradise" platform, hikers reach the confluence of the Climber’s Slope and Guanyin Statue Trail—a first-order triangulation point. A popular summit goal for many hikers, this spot offers the most expansive views. Follow the signs to access the southern trailhead of Zishan Mountain via Provincial Highway 3A.
