The Magong Jin-Guei-Tou Battery sits at the extreme western tip of the Magong Peninsula on the west side of Penghu Island, outside the southwest gate of Magong City, on Guei-Tou (Turtle Head) Hill southwest of Magong Bay (today’s Magong Harbor). It faces obliquely east-to-west the She-Tou (Snake Head) Hill at Fenggui-Wei on Greater Penghu Island, once nicknamed “Snake Head,” together guarding the mouth of Magong Harbor. Built in A.D. 1887 by commander Wu Hong-luo, it was armed with one 7-inch, one 10-inch, and one 12-inch Armstrong rifled muzzle-loading gun. Together with the East and West batteries on Xiyu, it formed the strongest artillery position in Penghu. This battery was one of the nine forts newly erected by Liu Ming-chuan; constructed at the same time as the West and East batteries on Xiyu, it was the most important of the four, giving it exceptional historic value. The vaulted bomb-proof barrack is the Jin-Guei-Tou Battery’s principal structure and a hallmark of Penghu’s forts. Today the battery’s earthen walls, gun emplacements, gun platforms, and entrance arch are all well preserved; the walls are built of Penghu’s famous basalt blocks bonded with cement. The smoke of battle has long since vanished with time, and the weather-worn Jin-Guei-Tou Battery, now restored, greets visitors with its old tales and a new face, opening to the public on 26 April 2017. Nearby historic sites such as the Pan An-bang Residence, Tianhou Temple, Shun-Cheng Gate, and Du-Xing Ten-Village are also worth a visit—must-sees for heritage lovers. Like a small peninsula, Jin-Guei-Tou Battery carries a hint of antiquity; at dusk, the setting sun bathes it in a gentle glow, creating a charming scene and making it a perfect spot for sunset views.
