Starting from Tienhsiang along the Central Cross-Island Highway towards Taiyu Ridge, after passing a series of tunnels and winding roads, visitors reach Guanyuan at an altitude of 2,374 meters. Surrounded by mountains and located east of Taiyu Ridge, Guanyuan is an important settlement and tourist spot on a flat ridge with expansive views. The most famous feature is the breathtaking sea of clouds. The area lies above the fog forest belt due to its high elevation and is adjacent to Ta-tsu-ki-li Creek (the middle reaches of Liwu Creek). When air currents rise through the valley, moisture often gathers here. Under sunny conditions, moisture stored in the forest evaporates, forming cloud clusters resembling an ocean. Poor weather causes accumulated humidity in the lowland areas to build up, also creating the cloud sea phenomenon. The clouds drift past in an ethereal, dreamlike manner. The best times to view the clouds are early morning and late afternoon. On lucky occasions, the cloud sea may extend slightly higher in altitude, spilling over Taiyu Ridge in a cascading flow, allowing visitors to witness the grandeur of Chi-lai North Peak surrounded by clouds; during sunset, the view shifts to a spectacular display as crimson霞 spreads across the sky, leaving an unforgettable impression. The ideal viewing location is near the parking lot at the Guanyuan Gas Station facing the mouth of Liwu Creek.
