Google Workspace administrators and users can expect significant changes to Google Chat and Currents. As Currents is phased out, Google Chat is being enhanced with new community features.
Google Chat is introducing new ways for organizations to share information across the enterprise with announcements, allowing admins to control permissions while enabling all members to read and react. Other features include in-line threading for rich topic exploration, custom emojis for personal expression, and the ability to discover and join communities of up to 8,000 members.
Google Chat provides tools for content moderation and data management, including space managers with moderation abilities and data loss prevention (DLP) for Chat. Integrations with third-party apps like Jira, GitHub, and Asana are also available, and users can build custom workflow apps using low-code and no-code tools.
Currents will no longer be available starting July 5, 2023, and data will no longer be available for download after August 8, 2023. Administrators are advised to export Currents data using Takeout before the deadline.
Administrators can review the Change Management Guide and use Takeout to explore Currents data. End-users can read more about using spaces in Google Chat.
