All indigenous population in Taiwan is highly concentrated in Hualien and Taitung Counties; however, Tao-Yuan City has the largest indigenous population in western Taiwan. With 16 indigenous groups, Tao-Yuan is home to the most diverse indigenous communities in western Taiwan. The Cultural Hall of Tao-Yuan Indigenous Peoples was officially opened in July 2004 as a cultural hub for urban indigenous communities and has since been listed as part of the Tao-Yuan City Story Hall Network. Aimed at establishing a cultural landmark for indigenous groups, the Cultural Hall and its surrounding plaza showcase various indigenous styles. Notable features include totem poles with stylized lines representing tribal spirit, traditional watchtowers used to protect tribe borders from intrusions, and the Rainbow Avenue symbolizing the unity of all indigenous groups, whose four sides are carved with distinct tribal totems, and whose base combines different tribal garment colors with unique topographical features of Taiwan, representing the convergence of cultures. The plaza also offers informative panels introducing each tribe along with a map showing the distribution of indigenous groups across Taiwan, providing visitors with an initial sense of indigenous culture. Functioning as a museum, the Cultural Hall displays dozens of indigenous relics ranging from traditional crafts, weaving tools, tribal costumes, and hunting knives to various historical artifacts. Permanent exhibitions within the Hall include tribal chronologies and detailed explanations of traditional ceremonies, with well-documented text and historical photos allowing visitors to better understand indigenous history. The venue also hosts sporadic art exhibitions, offering indigenous artists a platform to showcase tribal cultural works. In addition to static displays, visitors can visit the workshops of resident artists to participate in hands-on activities during guided tours and DIY experiences. On Fridays to Sundays, performances by resident dance troupes display the energetic spirit of indigenous music and dance. Annual festivals and rituals are also held at the venue.
