Coming to the Market, Not for Groceries
Dong Market is located in Siluo’s Shizaitou, built in the 1950s with timber salvaged from the temporary bridge used during the construction of the Xiluo Bridge. After surviving debates over whether to keep or demolish it, Dong Market has reinvented itself from a traditional marketplace into a creative bazaar hosting artisanal crafts and street performers.
Siluo’s Yanping Old Street was developed during the Japanese colonial era, introducing Baroque-style architecture. Most buildings are two- or three-story tall, their most eye-catching feature being the richly varied parapets; the most common form is long and flat, paired with narrow, elongated windows that evoke a quiet, refined nostalgia.
