Jincheng, historically known as Houpu, has long been the most vibrant town in Kinmen since ancient times. Apart from historical sites, many large-scale developments and shops choose to establish themselves in Jincheng due to its strategic transportation location. As the current political and economic center, the best way to experience the essence of Jincheng is through leisurely walking, allowing one to explore it thoroughly. The historical attractions such as the General Commander's Office, the Chiu Liang-kung Mother's Filial Piety Pavillion, and the Wujiang Book Academy document the town's illustrious past. The well-ordered and beautiful Model Street preserves ancient architecture while attracting new businesses, adding vitality to the area. The Houpu 16 Cultural and Artistic District provides a platform for young creative minds to showcase their artistic charm. Naturally, one should not miss the traditional snacks with long-standing local roots, such as oyster omelette, grilled egg roll, Cantonese congee, and soy rice cake, which have earned the small town of Houpu the well-deserved title of “Top 10 Tourist Towns in Taiwan.” The red-brick archways of Model Street, neatly aligned with continuous single-arch structures, exemplify architectural artistry and are rightfully named the Model Street. Numerous shops have established themselves here, from the famed baked pastries to various delightful souvenirs available for purchase. Adjacent to the Chen Clan Ancestral Temple, the Houpu 16 Cultural and Artistic District consists of sixteen shops originally owned by the Kinmen Chen Clan Association. Supported by the community and the local youth's efforts, this area preserves its architectural features and has been renovated into a hub for creative shops, forming a vibrant cultural and artistic atmosphere. The oyster omelette, a specialty made with Kinmen's famous stone oysters, is particularly renowned within the Houpu shopping district. The omelette is flavorful and juicy, bursting with the sweetness of stone oysters upon each bite. The charred egg rolls, grilled over charcoal, are known as "ring cakes." Minimal additional ingredients are used, with pure batter charred to a crispy and delicately sweet texture. These also make for excellent souvenirs. Cantonese congee is one of the must-have breakfasts in Kinmen. A bowl filled with rich ingredients and flavors, paired with the regionally distinctive deep-fried dough sticks, promises a fulfilling meal. For those visiting Houpu small town, there are many options to choose from, each with its own characteristic. The salted rice cake fry, another famous Houpu snack, may resemble steamed radish cake at first glance. However, it is primarily made from rice, taro, and seasoning. The cakes are meticulously sliced by the vendor to suit easy consumption, making them a perfect accompaniment for a stroll.
