Houtau Village, also known as “Houtuo” or “Houao,” derives its name because it lies at the farthest point from白沙 Village. A quintessential seaside fishing village, Houtau is renowned for its vibrant “Yang Gong Ba Shi Temple.” Annual festivals and elaborate ceremonies are held here, reflecting the villagers’ devotion. To the northwest of the village lies a bay affectionately called “Aoli,” serving as a common shelter for fishing boats, its entrance oriented northeastward. At first glance, Houtau may appear to be an unassuming, ancient fishing village; however, visiting this charming village promises unexpected rewards and unforgettable experiences. A must-see is the Houtau 53, a historic structure transformed through the efforts of community developers into “The Mindong Leisure Arts and Culture Center.” Supported by Lienchiang County’s proactive “Settlement Conservation” urban development program, in 1999 the North Kansu Cultural Association secured permission from the homeowners Lin HePing and his spouse to temporarily utilize the traditional house without charge. The central location of the site and its remarkably intact internal structure, complemented by the rustic simplicity of its exterior walls and an adjacent square, inspired Association members to actively engage in cleaning, waterproofing, and restoration efforts. Subsequently, Houtau 53 evolved into a multi-functional community center, hosting exhibitions, workshops, and serving as a social gathering and recreational hub for locals, military personnel, and tourists alike. The villagers have warmly participated in these initiatives; today, the various tableware displayed inside “The Mindong Leisure Center” are hand-crafted by elderly residents. Notably, prominent scholars and poets have also visited. Poet Ye Luo, who once resided in Qinbi, composed a new poem titled “Mindong Leisure” upon visiting. Furthermore, in 2005, the renowned Chinese poet Zheng Chouyu inscribed a tribute himself, adding to Houtau’s illustrious cultural legacy.
