The Railway Cultural Park is located at Hualien City's old train station. The area includes historical structures from the Japanese colonial era, such as the Hualien Harbor Branch Office of the Japanese Railways, the railway hospital, railway engineering section, railway police section, and numerous Japanese-style dormitories and residential buildings. Though damaged by a century of storms, these buildings form the region with the most complete preserved narrow-gauge railway base site in Taiwan. In 2002, through the active lobbying of cultural historians and local residents, the Cultural Affairs Council gradually designated these railway-related structures as Hualien County historical buildings and commenced restoration for the Railway Cultural Park. The park's base includes: 1. The Railway Bureau Hualien Harbor Branch Office Park plus the old station's fountain. 2. The Old Hualien Engineering Section plus the Old Hualien Police Section. 3. The steam locomotive water tower. 4. The Old Railway Hospital (Art Stone Street). 5. The Old Engine House of the Train Station (Huilan Heart - Sunlight Electric City). 6. Director's Residence and Employee Dormitories. 7. Railway Corridor Commercial District. After eight years of renovation, as of now the two parts, the First and Second Buildings, have been completed and opened to the public. The First Building includes the Railway Bureau Hualien Harbor Branch Office Park, while the Second Building comprises the Old Hualien Engineering Section and Old Hualien Police Section.
