In half‑day Rock there is a temple, called Ziyun Temple, a county‑level historic site. Next to the temple stands a Guanyin statue reaching seventy‑six chi (about 2.3 meters). Because the local scenery is so beautiful, the large garden of Half‑day Rock offers a picturesque view where every flower, tree and grass is lovely. The government therefore plans to develop the area as a Half‑day Rock Forest Recreation Zone, which is ideal for people in the Chiayi region to arrange a day trip. To climb Half‑day Rock, you can start from the Daihua Highway in front of Ziyun Temple, walk three kilometers, and reach Dàlóng bus stop.

Ziyun Temple on Half‑day Rock is located in Yanzi, Minhe Village, about seventeen kilometers from the city. It is one of the older Buddhist temples in Taiwan. The temple was built in the 22nd year of the Kangxi reign (1682 AD), over three hundred years ago. The temple is grand and simple, and serves as the faith center for the residents of Fanlu. Legend says that in 1662, a high monk named Juefeng He sheng crossed the sea to Taiwan, visited this place, and was struck by its striking peaks and tranquil scenery, away from the dust of the world. He sighed, “This place is truly a paradise like Yilan.” He then cleared the path, broke through brambles, and built a small shelter here.

Fanlu Township is located about five kilometers north of the upper reaches of Bachi Creek, east of Chiayi City. It was once the passageway for the Atayal indigenous people of Alishan to move in and out. The villages of Alishan, Shimei, and Dabeng—all Atayal—had to trade with the plain through Fanlu, so it was called “Fan‑zai Road,” which was renamed “Fanlu” during the Japanese colonial period. Even today, the ruins of Wangkailiao, built for defense against external threats, still remain.

Half‑day Rock is the most important attraction for the people of Fanlu and the surrounding villages, and it is also their center of faith. In addition, it serves as a crucial gateway for entering Alishan via Daihua Highway (Route 159‑B).
