Located in Gongguan Mining Village, it is the birthplace of Taiwan's petroleum. The earliest discovery of petroleum in Taiwan was in 1813, during the 22nd year of the Jiaqing Emperor's reign. The site of the first well drilled by the Japanese, "No. 1 Well at Chuhuangkeng," is about 80 meters to the right of the front gate of the Chuhuangkeng mining field. A total of 99 wells were drilled due to the rich oil reserves. The place got its name "Chuhuangkeng" because locals found that liquid with a sulfur-like color was oozing out from the ground, which they believed was sulfur, not crude oil. Chuhuangkeng is not only the earliest but also the most important oil mining site in Taiwan. Geologically, it belongs to an anticline structure, with the highest part in the center and the two wings sloping outward, trapping oil and gas inside. The two wings of the anticline are composed of alternating layers of soft and hard sandstone and shale. The geological structure, stratigraphy, and paleontology of this area make it a typical region for study in Taiwan, and it is a must-visit place for geology students. China Petroleum Company has marked the geological rock layers along the highway in the southern part of this township, near the Hou-Long Creek valley, making it an excellent outdoor geology teaching site. At night, the mining field shines brightly, with the left side being a farm, creating a beautiful scene known as the "Night Hong Kong."
