連江縣北竿鄉碧園
Verdant scenes juxtaposed with military charm. Biyuan is situated on the northeastern hillside of Wusha Village, a hillside resting park established against the slope. The park is densely planted with Acacia farnesiana and Senna tora, and it assembles representative local plants such as Plectranthus amboinicus, Ficus pumila, and Lycoris radiata. Verdant vitality flourishes throughout the park, particularly with its abundant ferns, making it the most significant botanical ecological park in North Matsu. A memorial tower erected in 1960 stands prominently within the park to honor military personnel who died in official service or died in battle. Its solemn dignity records the sacrifices of soldiers to the Matsu region, allowing visitors to pay respects to the heroic men who safeguarded the nation. In recent years, following extensive renovations by the Matsu National Scenic Area Administration, facilities have significantly improved, including simple trails, pavilions, staircases, and scenic platforms for visitors' relaxation. Graceful Chinese-style bridges and pavilions blend into the setting, bringing a delicate elegance to this somber landscape. When passing this site, visitors may take four stone steps to ascend, where shady trees offer refreshing coolness. The experience not only quenches the need for respite but also presents panoramic sea views and opportunities to observe plant life, an experience of multiple benefits in one visit! Biyuan's uniquely rich plant diversity, though primarily artificial vegetation, has thrived through natural succession of flora and the germination and growth of seed sources from underground "seed banks," resulting in an extraordinary ecological wealth. According to botanist Kuo Cheng-meng's survey, Northern Matsu Island is home to at least 97 families and 314 species of higher plants, while Biyuan itself hosts at least 61 families and 128 species. Notably, the rare Lepisorus thomsonii, commonly known as "rabbit's foot fern," is found uniquely in the North Matsu region, with the largest population observed in Biyuan. Stepping into Biyuan, one will repeatedly encounter turns of lush greenery, where every corner reveals the intimately accessible beauty of thriving greenness.
