Craftsman: Huang Sha-rong Huang Sha-rong was born in the rural countryside of Fuxing Township. In 2013 he was registered as the preserver of traditional woodcarving under Changhua County’s Traditional Craft program. After finishing elementary school he apprenticed with a master to learn shrine carving, and later studied the Japanese “ranma” transom technique at a Japanese firm, deftly weaving that skill into his own works. Across fifty-one years of woodcarving he has let his hands speak, distilling local tradition into the essence of the art. Orchids are his signature motif; using the resilient grain of native Taiwan camphor, he renders the flowers’ delicate grace so precisely that their fragility seems alive. Honors include the Huangshi Award of the Huangshi Art Exhibition, first prize in crafts at the 16th National Art Exhibition, and recognition as a second-term master of the Da-duan Craftsman Award. Huang Sha-rong Woodcarving Studio is located in Changhua County’s Fuxing Township, at the Painted Cow Village of Fubao, Turtle Park, and the Driftwood Light Landmark.
