Steep Cliff and the Sky Seam Listening to Waves — “One-slit Sky”, located on the western cape of East Dongyin Island, is a striking sea-eroded gully terrain where two towering rock walls face each other vertically from narrow above to broader below, reaching up to the sky and down to the sea. When the tide rushes in and crashes against the rocks below, it echoes like the thunderous gallop of a thousand horses, echoing powerfully through the cliffs. Within the two cliffs lie tunnels with a reinforced concrete bridge connecting them, the bridge surface only tens of meters above sea level, yet exuding a grandeur of over a hundred meters in height. The four large characters, “Heaven's Seam, Listening to Waves,” are carved onto the cliff walls and vividly capture the charm of this site. These were inscribed in 1972 by General Lai Ming-Tang, then Chief of the General Staff, during his visit to East Dongyin Island. Etched on the towering rock wall, the calligraphy evokes a sense of isolation and solitude typical of the frontline defenses. In the past, “One-slit Sky” was a military restricted zone; however, as of now, the site is fully open to the public, and no advance reservations are necessary for entry. Visitors can descend along the stairs to the end of the trench system to enjoy the panoramic view of “One-slit Sky” and listen to the sounds of crashing waves, anytime they choose. Note: Visitors are advised to be cautious of the steps and watch for slippery surfaces and potential falling rocks. Power will be switched off once the operating hours end; visitors are kindly requested to comply and ensure their safety during the visit.
