The Daluolan Creek Ancient Canal Trail is also called the “Fushan Ma’an Ancient Canal Trail.” In the Atayal language, Daluolan is “Tranan,” meaning “the confluence of two streams,” and in Mandarin it became “Daluolan.” The Atayal first crossed the ridge from the Baling area of Taoyuan to hunt here; finding plentiful water and fertile soil, they gradually settled, making this the Atayal’s first settlement in Wulai. The tribe’s lifeline, Daluolan Creek, is flanked by emerald banks. The channel narrows and widens in turns, fish glide through the crystal water, and the scenery is breathtaking. To supply agriculture, a canal was dug during the Japanese era to divert Daluolan water for tribal irrigation; later, with tapwater, the canal lost its use, yet it still murmurs on. Ancient trees tower beside the trail, their canopy shading a paradise of flora and fauna—an ecological corridor. The canal follows the hillside contour; far below, Daluolan Creek flows through the valley, its white ribbon occasionally glimpsed through the trees. From the high viewing platform the canal’s gentle flow and the valley’s jagged stones create an unforgettable sight.
