Dedicated to Guanyin Bodhisattva, Ziyunyan was built during the Kangxi era of the Qing dynasty. Over the past three centuries it has been renovated and rebuilt many times; after an eight-year expansion and reconstruction project from 1972 to 1980, it was completely transformed. Locals customarily call Ziyunyan “Guanyin Pavilion”; it is one of the most important centers of worship in central Taiwan. A cultural center was later added, integrating religion, culture, and tourism, making it a well-known scenic spot in Qingshui. The temple’s central axis is lined with several grand halls, flanked on either side by three-story bell towers. The glazed tiles shimmer in layered tiers, extending toward the rear of the complex. The main hall, a two-story structure enshrining Guanyin Bodhisattva, features dazzling caisson ceilings that lend the temple its resplendent appearance. The cultural center’s exterior blends traditional Chinese architecture with religious ambiance. Inside are a reading room, temple-history gallery, arts-and-culture activity center, library, periodical room, children’s room, auditorium, and guest lodgings. Behind the main hall lies a small garden with exotic rockeries, flowing water, and rare flowers and trees, all laid out with ingenious design. Within the garden stands an ancient stele dated to the 43rd year of the Qianlong reign (1778), one of the temple’s treasured relics. Renowned far and wide, Ziyunyan draws many visitors who come to pay homage. Whether on holidays or weekdays, pilgrims arrive in an endless stream.
