Feeling that the flat riverside bike paths no longer provide enough challenge for you? As an experienced cyclist, why not conquer the Roman Road Trail (Route 118 in Taoyuan)? Starting from the Luofu area of Taoyuan's Fenghsien District in the east and ending in the Maxwu Village area of Guanshi, Hsinchu in the west, this 33.83-kilometer route combines steep ascents, hairpin turns, testing your cornering and gear-shifting skills, and is also a significant test of endurance. Starting from Yihsing Suspension Bridge as the cycling starting point, entering Luofu, the first challenge is an immediate 100-meter uphill climb. Effortfully pedaling uphill under the sun, the stunning views reward your exertions. Looking out over the Luofu and Fenghsien Bridges, the eye-catching structures add lively vitality to the magnificent mountain ranges. After conquering the first uphill leg, treat yourself to a Baihao coffee at a scenic café, complemented by the view of the Dahan Creek and its surrounding mountainous scenery, recharging your energy. Following this, a gentle downhill ride passes through Jialan and Chao Yang, where the sight of giant bamboo huts signifies reaching Xikou Village. Here, you can optionally sample traditional jaw harp music and experience local hunting culture. Continuing westward with another climb through Kuehui leads into Meitu Mountain at an elevation of 404 meters. From the summit, the breathtaking panoramic views of Am Ping and Jiangmu Island are an unforgettable highlight. Alongside the route, restaurants and street vendors offer convenient lunching and resupply options. Continuing towards Shihmen Reservoir, spring brings cherry blossoms and summer brings tsubaki blossoms, infusing this mix of tough and leisurely journey with a relaxing atmosphere. Next comes the Gaogao community consisting of the four clusters of Gao Rao Ping, Xiaogao R ao, Zhonggao R ao, and Shanggao R ao. This area offers a rare chance to experience the century-old Tayal culture. After approximately 1.9 kilometers of hairpin turns nearby Basha Café, when you see the Guanshi District signpost, you reach the top at an elevation of 464 meters—this is the highest point of the Roman Road Trail! Once you've savored the triumphant feeling of reaching the peak, the next 13 kilometers downhill awaits to offer pure exhilaration of wind resistance, where you can take a detour to appreciate the old elegance of the Mawudu Rice Bridge, built during the Showa era.
