Dadong Mountain, one of Taiwan's Hundred Small Peaks, rises to an elevation of 405 meters atop Gushan's Guilun Ridge. Known as the 405 High Point for its strategic location, it features a first-order triangulation point and offers unparalleled panoramic vistas. Not only does it provide sweeping views of the Taoyuan metropolis, but its unique position at the crossroads of Gushan, Shulin, Shanjia, and Yingge also allows distant glimpses of New Taipei City and even Taipei 101. As such, whether by day or night, the mountain consistently draws hikers and photography enthusiasts alike.
Access to 405 High Point begins at Yuanguang Bridge, where one ascends along the Fuyuan Mountain Trail to the Dadong Mountain Path. This 4.3-kilometer route intersects with Shiyun Road, leading to Shiyun Chan Temple—a century-old site famous for its exquisite Jiaozitao (blue and white clay glazing), towering archways, and steep stone steps that exude solemnity. The temple courtyard is shaded by ancient Barringtonia asiatica, camphor, and Macaranga trees—centuries-old giants whose dense foliage offers a tranquility for weary travelers. Returning to Datong Road, the trail passes the Xu Kong Chan Temple and scattered "local-style restaurants" nestled in the hills before reaching 405 High Point.
Alternatively, another route follows the Tuken Industrial Road via the Jiushan Zhongshu Taoism Institute and Qianfo Temple, a 3.2-kilometer journey through untouched primary forests.
The 405 High Point is equipped with an observation deck, signage explaining the triangulation point and hydrological observation station. To the east stretch the Xueshan Range and Dahan River; to the west, Guanyin Mountain and Linkou; to the south, Zhongli and the Fuhsing Mountain area; and to the north, Dahan River and the Yuan-shan Hotel. The overwhelming awe of reaching the peak, cleansed by the forest's natural aromatics, instantly relieves any fatigue from the hike.
Dadong Mountain also shines for its ecological richness. Butterflies like swallowtails and purple-banded swallowtails flutter through the hills in spring and summer, autumn sees rustling mugwort grasses, and winter brings romantic maple red hues. From 405 High Point, one can also connect with the Datong Mountain Trail to Qinglong Ling, or venture to the Guan Gong Ling Butterfly Trail to admire over 30 wild butterfly species.
