Yanliao Village, located in Shoufeng Township, Hualien County, boasts the longest gravel beach in Taiwan. The name "Yanliao" originates from the fact that edible salt near the area was previously processed here in early Hualien Harbor, and during the Japanese colonial period, this region was known as "Yanliao Port." In recent years, whenever summer arrives, this location gathers a myriad of local and international handicraft artists and backpackers forming a vibrant, exotic "Sea or Crazy Market." Whether it's handicrafts, tarot readings, or discussions on various topics, all these activities come together in the market. Along the Yanliao area are guesthouses with distinctive characteristics. Sipping a cup of coffee by a seaside-facing window can make for a delightful afternoon, or one may leisurely cycle along the scenic coastal bike path and then rest by visiting nearby stores to enjoy a fresh and abundant seafood feast! The Yanliao tribe consists of three small villages: Daking, Tomay (Tomay), and Olai-zhuangiao. Among these, Tomay is composed of Ami people from the Lilotao society, whose name means "Bear Mountain." Local legends claim that in the past, the Ami people in Lilotao hunted a giant bear at this location. The other two villages belong to the Ami people of Sugeulan society.
