苗栗縣南庄鄉中山路144號
The Thirteen-Interval Old Street, once the most bustling street in Nanzhuang, was a major thoroughfare back in the day. However, it declined after being flooded by the Gloria Typhoon in 1963, causing residents to relocate. In recent years, thanks to the efforts of young people returning to their hometown and the township government's funding, the old street has gradually revived. There are two common theories about the origin of the street's name: one is that an old man counted a total of 13 shops while passing by, and the other is that there were exactly 13 houses connected in the street, leading residents to name it the Thirteen-Interval Old Street. The Thirteen-Interval Old Street spans from No. 60 to No. 144 of Zhongshan Road, with red brick pillars marking the entrance and exit. The street is also lined with kerosene lamp-style streetlights, which match the coal-mining imagery, as well as a mural depicting people mining and logging. The street's design, combined with wooden signboards featuring special symbols such as scissors, combs, and tai chi, adds to its rustic charm. These symbols represent the businesses that operated in the street, including barbershops, blacksmiths, and fortune-telling shops. Compared to the more famous Guifang Street, Thirteen-Interval Old Street is less crowded, giving it a more nostalgic atmosphere. Although still in development, the street has attracted like-minded individuals who are working together to promote Nanzhuang's local ingredients and culture. As a result, various unique shops have opened, including soap shops, bakery, and health food stores. The introduction of new concepts is expected to bring fresh ideas to the old street.
