Diyi Hall, also known as Diyih Hall and commonly called the Marshal Temple, was established in 1873 by the Lin family of Banqiao after the Quan–Zhang clan feuds during the Xianfeng era. It was built to honor the martial artists and braves who died in battle. The principal deity, Marshal Xu, originally named Xu Cai, was a martial-arts instructor employed by the Lin Ben-Yuan family. During the Zhang–Quan feud of 1859, Xu and twelve guards lost their lives; the Lin family of Banqiao then funded the shrine to comfort their spirits. The main structure follows a three-bay main hall flanked by two protective wings. Its plank doors bear door-god paintings holding swords and seals, resembling those of traditional temples, and the extant fabric still displays the craftsmanship of traditional artisans. Because it exemplifies Hakka participation as mercenaries in the Zhang–Quan feuds, it holds significant historical value and was designated a New Taipei City monument in 2013. A multimillion-dollar restoration preserved this precious cultural asset. From 2018 the New Taipei City Government carried out two years of conservation and adaptive-reuse work, partially opening the main hall and forecourt. In the future, together with the Lin Family Garden, it will host irregular “Old Banqiao” walking tours led by volunteer docents. Together with Cihui Temple, Jieyun Temple, and Dazhong Temple it forms the “Four Ancient Temples of Banqiao,” creating the cultural identity of “Pang-kio Old Town.”
