Pitanga, also known as Eugenia uniflora and Purple Beauty, originally hails from South America. Many years ago, it was introduced to cultivation in Taiwan by the National Pitanga Cultivation Promotion Farm and can only be seen at that farm throughout the entire island. The fruit of the Pitanga resembles grapes and grows directly on the trunk and branches of the tree. When viewed from afar, one can see a dense cluster of deep purple plump fruits attached to the trunk, creating a most striking sight. On healthy or mature trees, delicate and fine white blossoms are visible on the branches all year round, with especially abundant flowering in spring and autumn each year. After the flowers wither, numerous fruits develop, making this an ideal time for visitors to enjoy. Tourists arriving by tour bus will receive a Pitanga ice cream per person.
