Simple Chinese Japanese English Korean Hong Kong Subtropical old banyan tree is located in Penghu Baisha Port Village, on the 203 road, heading toward the Penghu Aquarium intersection, right at the Boading Palace courtyard. Besides the ancient banyan with its beams, on the way northward, before turning into the Penghu Aquarium, there is also a banyan forest full of stories.
The old banyan trees on either side of Boading Palace are wide-spreading, and because the northeast monsoon in Penghu is strong, the trees rarely grow tall, so they spread outward instead. Their aerial roots twist and climb over concrete supports, forming dense foliage. The roots hang down, burrowing deep into the soil, eventually growing into new pillars. Over time they create a natural shade barrier. Beneath the trees there are cool benches and recliners—a great spot for chatting and cooling off. Travelers can pause here for a quick break and a blessing.
These banyans were likely planted during the Qing dynasty and are now over a century old, making them the second oldest banyan trees in Penghu. Each side has one tree, and together they are known as the “lovers’ trees.” The two banyans embrace the temple, as if sheltering Boading Palace from wind and rain. The area is also a popular spot for village elders to play chess, children to frolic, and locals to chat about everyday life.
