Hako Village is situated on a hillside in the east of Ruisui Township, Hualien County, overlooking the Ruisui downtown area across the Furuan Stream. Traveling eastward from the Ruisui downtown area and crossing Ruisong Bridge, you follow the local road uphill. Along the way, you will see gentle hillsides planted with rows and rows of pomelo trees. Most of these are mature pomelo trees with more than 20 years of age. Every year in the period around the White Dew (Bai Lu) season in the traditional Chinese lunar calendar of July or August, the pomelo harvest season begins. The Hako area of Ruisui covers over 600 hectares of pomelo orchards, producing approximately 20 million pomelos annually. In recent years, this region has become a well-known source of high-quality agricultural products in Hualien. Once renowned internationally for black tea, Hako gradually shifted to cultivating pomelos due to changes in market conditions. After years of cultivation improvements, Hako pomelos are now characterized by their sweet, aromatic, and juicy flavor, successfully expanding their market throughout the country and establishing a new identity for agricultural products in the Hako region. To accommodate the growing trend of tourism, Hako area orchards have also begun developing tourism initiatives. During the Hako pomelo harvest season, orchards are open to the public for fruit picking. This arrangement helps reduce harvesting costs for farmers while allowing visitors to enjoy the fun of fruit picking in a rural setting. Visitors not only get to taste the freshest Hako pomelos but also bring some home as gifts for family and friends.
