Yunlin’s very first Catholic church, the Shuzijiao Catholic Church, stands on the southern bank of the Zhuoshui River. In the Guangxu era, believers in the Shuzijiao settlement invited Father Gao Xilong of the Luocuo Catholic Church to preach here, renting a simple bamboo house as a temporary mission station—the beginning of the parish and the start of Catholic propagation in Yunlin County. Built during the Guangxu period of the Qing dynasty, Shuzijiao Catholic Church is the county’s earliest Catholic church; in 1930 it was rebuilt in brick, and its octagonal roof gives it a distinctive flavor.
