The Gengliao Ancient Trail is one of the five ancient trails that connected Nan'gang to Shenkeng and Shiding in the early years. It is the most well-preserved and still in use today. This trail is not only a convenient path to Shanzhukuku and Tuku Ridge but also a century-old road that allows visitors to explore ancient dwellings. The trail has been paved with granite steps, but the narrow and winding path still retains its original rustic charm. Some sections of the trail have not been paved and are lined with small white flowers, adding to the trail's simplicity and ancient charm. The Gengliao Ancient Trail connects with the Laoliao Ancient Trail at its rear, which was once a famous tea-producing area. The trail used to be an important route for transporting and manufacturing camphor, and was originally known as the "Nao Liao Ancient Trail". About 110 years ago, the trail became a popular route for tea merchants and villagers, and was later renamed "Laoliao" based on its homophony. The Chunxuan Farm, originally known as the Nan'gang First Citizen Farm, has been transformed into a comprehensive farm that combines education and leisure. The farm features over 1,000 fragrant trees, golden needle flowers, and cassia trees, as well as treehouses and observation decks for visitors to enjoy. The Wanggao Pavilion is located at the highest point of Tuku Ridge and offers a panoramic view of the Taipei city. It is said that a watchtower was built here during the Qing dynasty, and the current pavilion provides an even better view. The Pan Family Ancestral Hall is a 160-year-old traditional dwelling that can be seen along the trail. It features gun holes that were used for defense and is a testament to the history of the area. The trail not only offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape but also provides a glimpse into the region's rich history. The trailhead is connected to a narrow stone stairway that leads to the highway. As you walk along the trail, you can see the fast-paced traffic on the highway and appreciate the natural beauty of the area. On a clear day, you can see the entire Taipei basin from the top of the mountain, including the Taipei 101 building, the Songshan Airport, and the Neihu Incinerator. The trail is home to a variety of flora and fauna, including a rare stand of "Brushwood trees". The sound of the stream running through the valley washes away the fatigue of the climb, making the journey even more enjoyable. The Laoliao Ancient Trail and Gengliao Ancient Trail are testaments to the region's rich history and natural beauty.
