The Tianmu Ancient Trail is a hiking trail that traverses the northwest slope of the Shilin and Huagong areas, and is also the southern saddle of the Shama Mountain. It was once an important part of the ancient Fish Road, and includes several trails between Huagong and Tianmu. The trail is built along a large water pipe, with babbling brook water and primitive forest scenery, making it a cool and comfortable place to walk.
The trail can also be connected to the Cui峰步道 (Cuifeng Trail) to the Monkey Cave Industry Road, which is nestled in the mountains and shady, making it a particularly cool and comfortable walk. The Tianmu Ancient Trail was once an important route between Jinshan and Tianmu, but after the Yangde Avenue was opened, it became a real ancient trail. In recent years, it has become a popular hiking route, with many visitors on weekends.
The Tianmu Ancient Trail has an elevation of 300 to 120 meters, and is a low-altitude subtropical broadleaf forest ecosystem. The northeast monsoon blowing from the Datun Mountain saddle brings strong winds, rainwater, and low temperatures, making the trail's windward side a warm-temperate broadleaf forest landscape. On the other hand, the leeward side of the mountain has a humid and shaded valley environment, which is suitable for tropical broadleaf tree species to grow.
Although the Tianmu Ancient Trail has an elevation of only 300 meters, it has a compressed ecosystem environment of tropical, subtropical, and warm-temperate broadleaf forests, which is quite rare and precious.
**Special reminder to mountain friends:** Near the fork in the road to Cuifeng Waterfall, it is easy to see monkeys, so please do not feed them, as they may fight for food and accidentally hurt you.
The Water Pipe Trail was a water source area during the Japanese colonial era, not only with rich and primitive forest scenery but also with many plants growing along the water pipe. The water pipe was built to connect the third water source to Tianmu and Shilin. The trail's early segment has no large water pipe, but the later segment has a water pipe buried underneath.
The trail begins at the Sanjiaopu Power Plant and starts with over a thousand stone steps. Along the way, you can try free hot tea and sweet potato soup. The trail passes through a longan tree forest, with large trees that are several decades old. As you ascend, the road becomes steeper, and you can rest at pavilions along the way. On a clear day, you can see the Linkou platform and enjoy the Taipei night view.
The Water Pipe Trail is a poetic journey, with a comfortable and cool walking experience, suitable for viewing the scenery. The trail has a rich ecosystem, with over 300 species of plants, and a well-protected environment. The trail also has many small streams, waterfalls, and wildlife, such as monkeys and frogs.
The trail's water pipe was built to channel water from the mountains to Tianmu and Shilin, and the sound of running water can still be heard today. The trail is a great place to experience the natural beauty of Taiwan and enjoy a relaxing walk.
