Koji pottery combines sculpting, painting, and ceramic firing into one art form and is one of the most highly valued folk crafts in Taiwan’s traditional arts.

With its rich shapes, splendid colors, and an atmosphere brimming with auspicious joy, Koji pottery is widely used in ordinary architecture and temple decoration. The Chiayi region is the birthplace of Taiwanese Koji pottery; the Japanese once called it “Chiayi ware.” Mr. Hsiao Wu-lung was born in Chiayi City in 1948. Inspired by the miniature-carving master Lou Yung-yu, he became Lou’s pupil in 1980, devoting himself to this nearly lost ancient art.

In 1993 he established the Hsiao Wu-lung Koji Pottery Studio. Mr. Hsiao is also one of the few micro-carving specialists in Taiwan; his works received an Honorable Mention in the Crafts Division of the 47th Provincial Art Exhibition and a Third Prize in the Carving Category of the 4th National Crafts Awards. Today his creations are recognized and cherished by experts both at home and abroad.
