Tongpan Island is located about 6 nautical miles from the main island of Magong. The entire island of Tongpan is composed of columnar basalt rock pillars arranged in a clearly distinct pattern. Its well-developed columnar joints are considered the most outstanding in Penghu, earning it the title of Penghu's "Yellowstone Park." The columnar joints and planar joints on this island are highly developed. Originally these structures took the forms of hexagons or pentagons, but due to intense weathering and erosion, the original sharp edges of the rock columns have become rounded. The top surface of certain basalt columns have even weathered into spherical shapes. The wave-cut platform on the southwestern coast of the island has a concentric lava outflow pattern formed by basalt lava that once erupted outward. The central uplifted block resembles a lotus throne and is named the "Lotus Seat," which intermittently appears and disappears with changing tides, forming a unique topographical landscape in Penghu. The "Star Chasing Site" of the "Brolang Coffee Beat Series" advertisement opens with the full outline of Tongpan Island filling the frame. The resounding drumbeats and magnificent basalt rock formations are deeply impressive. Tongpan Island's basalt rock formations are frequently used as a location for travel programs and commercials. The columnar jointed basalt rock, with its grand presence, stands as the most representative and unique element of Penghu.
