The cat lazily dozes on the motorcycle seat, the rich aroma of coffee wafts through the alleys, shop owners greet each other with hushed chatter… After shedding the commotion of Zhongzheng Road, time slows down its pace on Xinmin Old Street. Stretching less than three hundred meters, Xinmin Old Street humbly lies within the Da Miaoli commercial area. The former "Taoyuan's first street" once flourished, but over time, as the commercial center shifted, it gradually faded into tranquility. Divided by Zhongzheng Road, the western section near Wen Chang Park still preserves traditional stores such as rice shops and bridal shops. Back when Xinmin Market existed, this area gathered numerous shops selling daily necessities and peddlers offering everything from hardware to rice and fabrics. Hence, during holidays, Xinmin Street was always filled with crowds. Although the old days are gone, savoring a bowl of street-side noodles, a fragrant "Passerby Rice" scented with garlic chives, or "Sweet Grain Rice" with a salty and sweet blend paired with side dishes offers a different way to relive nostalgia. After a period of quiet, Xinmin Old Street gained renewed attention when the eastern section near the hundred-year-old Yang Family Ancestral Temple saw the emergence of a creative café. Today, Xinmin Street has become a crucial hub where local creators promote Taoyuan’s culture. "It's not just a café!" serves as the ethos of Xinmin Street’s shops; the menu's "Xinmin Meal" features delicacies from old-established stores such as peanut paste, pudding cake, fried dough sticks, and malt candy. Transforming heritagespaces into art studios, events like exhibitions, lectures, concerts, and book clubs are held, ensuring the old street’s charm continues. In 2015, over twenty art installations by dozens of artists covered Xinmin Street for the inaugural "Back to Taoyuan Art Festival," combining the old space with new creativity. The blend of old and new is particularly enchanting.
