In 1989, Deng Shuling in America, unable to tolerate oily and overly salty foods during her pregnancy, began her journey in developing baked goods. After returning to Taiwan, due to frequent food safety incidents, she established the Herla Studio, offering customized pre-order delivery of natural yeast bread. Deng Shuling firmly believes that her bread must be 100% natural and accompanied by seasonal ingredients. Concerned about potential additives in semi-finished products, she also strives to make her fillings in-house and personally visits small-scale farmers to ensure the quality of raw materials. Her method employs natural sourdough yeast culture through low-temperature prolonged fermentation, developing distinctive natural flavors and textures without any artificial additives. Each bread in the shop is a wholesome artisanal creation requiring over 40 hours of meticulous preparation. Encouraged by customer support, Herla opened its first physical store in 2014 and obtained ISO 9001 certification in 2016 to further elevate product quality. Although natural yeast bread is time-consuming and often affected by weather conditions, Deng’s perseverance stems from customers’ continued appreciation. Natural and healthy artisanal bread has become the go-to choice for many fitness enthusiasts and health-conscious consumers, particularly appealing to those with the “three highs” due to its gentle digestion and absence of bloating or discomfort. Passionate about fermented foods, Deng has also developed products like plum wine, tempeh, and others, with her Custard Apple Fermented Wine, Jasmine Blossom Fermented Wine, and Passion Fruit Fermented Wine soon to launch! The walls of Herla’s health-conscious bakery feature murals of enchanted forests and fairies, symbolizing the “healing power” and “creativity” embodied in each bread. After tasting the slightly sour flavor and 100% natural ingredients, one bite after another gradually transforms the digestive system into a healthier state.
