新北市八里區博物館路200號
Located in Bali, the Thirteenth Line Museum is Taiwan's first archaeological museum. Initially, it was built to protect the "Thirteenth Line Site," a national secondary historic site. In 1955, a military aircraft flying over Bali detected an abnormal magnetic reaction on its compass, leading to the discovery of the Thirteenth Line Site. Geologists and archaeologists subsequently conducted explorations and discovered that the site was a prehistoric archaeological site, which prompted the establishment of this archaeological museum. The Thirteenth Line culture belongs to the Iron Age in northern Taiwan and is currently the only prehistoric culture in Taiwan confirmed to possess iron-smelting technology. Not only is it the sole archaeological museum in northern Taiwan, but it is also the first museum in New Taipei City to receive environmental education certification. The museum consists of three distinct architectural groups that form a complete conceptual framework, representing the contrasts between mountains and sea, as well as past and present. The structures utilize authentic and permeable materials such as exposed concrete, sandstone, and weathered metal panels. The museum features permanent exhibitions of significant artifacts unearthed from the site, special exhibition halls, and archaeological learning experience rooms. These exhibits provide detailed information on the Thirteenth Line culture, Yuanshan culture, and other Taiwanese historical sites and backgrounds. Over a thousand years ago, residents on the left bank of the Danshui River lived in stilt houses and used human-face ceramic jars. Legend has it that indigenous tribes who practiced headhunting would engage in "out-grass" activities, later replacing them with such ritual items. Their daily meals consisted of seafood such as fish, shrimp, and shellfish. Although their way of life is unimaginable to us today, the Thirteenth Line Museum offers a glimpse into their lives. The museum provides a rich and engaging approach to introducing the Thirteenth Line culture discovered at the site, allowing visitors to understand the lives of the Thirteenth Line people a thousand years ago. The museum also regularly hosts special exhibitions, sometimes showcasing the historical trajectory of the Danshui River's development and other times featuring archaeological explorations with significant scientific and educational value. These exhibitions enable visitors to acquire rich knowledge while having fun and inspire children to develop an interest in history.
