Between Ruifang and Shuangxi stations there are nine old tunnels, giving rise to the Taiwanese proverb “a coin bores nine holes.” Four of these disused tunnels have been converted into bicycle paths. After 30 years of abandonment, the old Yilan Line railway tunnel has been reopened as the 3.19-km Sandiaoling Eco-Friendly Tunnel, Taiwan’s first “rebar bicycle path.” Designers used a reflecting pool to gradate the portal from dark to light, creating a stunning mirrored reflection against Sandiaoling’s lush green mountains; if you’re lucky, you’ll meet a train. For safety on the two-way section between the Sanguali Tunnel and the cliffside walkway, cyclists must walk their bikes. The Sandiaoling and Sanguali tunnel bike routes link the tourist trails of Shuangxi’s Mudan and Ruifang’s Sandiaoling, forming the newest low-carbon itinerary on the Youth Shanhai Line. To reduce traffic impact and because space inside the tunnel is limited, visitors must apply online before entering (click here). Interpretive panels line the route, and guided tours can be reserved on the booking website.
