The Pingxi area of New Taipei City is ringed by peaks; add up the big and small summits and you get more than twenty, earning the nickname “Twenty-Four Filial Peaks.” Among them stand three celebrated mountains—Xiaozi (Filial-Son) Mountain, Ci’mu (Loving-Mother) Peak, and Putuo Mountain—looking almost unclimbable; happily, steep, hard rock ridges have been carved into stone stairways, with ropes or iron railings to cling to, drawing hordes of hikers. The trail begins at the Shidi Bridge trailhead, passes through a low-elevation broadleaf forested valley, and arrives at a four-way junction where the three peaks meet: left to Xiaozi Mountain, right to Putuo Mountain, straight ahead to Ci’mu Peak. Ci’mu Peak is 410 m above sea level; from its summit you can continue north to the adjacent prominence of Putuo Mountain.
