The Mataan Wetland in Guangfu Township, Hualien, is a naturally spring-fed marshland ecosystem continuously nurturing diverse wildlife, including a rich variety of bird species, frogs, and benthic fish. Visitors can experience the unique "Palakaw" Balagao ecological fishing method, immersing themselves in a natural ecology lesson while savoring freshly caught fish and shrimp, salt-grilled tilapia, and the distinctive stone-hotpot feast—a culinary experience rooted in indigenous traditions. Mataan has long been the traditional territory of the Amis people. In the past, the area was full of "tree beans," which is why the Amis called it "vataan" (meaning "tree bean" in their language). The Amis residing here developed the three-stage "Palakaw" system using hollow bamboo and branches, creating structures in the ponds. This allows shrimp and fish to congregate in the habitat for a period, followed by lifting the "Persicaria chinensis" branches to the surface, shaking off small shrimp into a triangular fishnet, and catching eel-like bottom-dwelling species such as loaches and catfish from the lower bamboo containers. Adhering strictly to the philosophy of "never draining the pond for fishing," it highlights the Amis people's ecological wisdom. From May to August, the Mataan Wetland blooms with lotus and lily, forming a breathtaking summer floral seascape. Walk along the T-shaped wooden boardwalk, stroll amidst the romantic summer flowers, and ascend the lookout point for a panoramic view of the wetland. Then, enjoy a bike ride or a leisurely walk on the "Mataan Wetland Bikeway" for a complete nature-rich adventure.
