Surrounded by a seasonal sea of blossoms stands the Goddess of the thorny cedar: the Haisali Futian Temple, originally named Jinxing Temple. Dedicated to Lord Xu, the Thousand-Year King, and to the Third Holy Mother of Heaven (popularly called the Haisali Ma), it was first erected in the mid-Qing dynasty. During the Shōwa era the local constable Chen Huaifa launched a fund-raising campaign that rebuilt the sanctuary on its original site in brick, tile and timber. Further renovations took place in 1954 and 1963.
Futian Temple, located in Xingtong Village, Citong Township, enshrines the Holy Mother of Heaven. Founded in the Daoguang reign of the Qing dynasty and repeatedly repaired and enlarged, it was completely reconstructed in 1997 to assume its present appearance. The whole edifice is resplendent; as dusk falls and the lamps are lit, its glittering magnificence is revealed in full glory.
