SimplerChineseJapaneseEnglishKoreanAbout 2 kilometers north of Da Bai Sha Yu in the sea, there is a typical square hill terrain island. Due to the majority of the island's surface being covered in large flat rock slabs with no traces of erosion or markings, resembling an iron mallet plate used in blacksmithing, it is called Tie Zhan Yu. The island's height is approximately five meters, surrounded entirely by vertical sea cliffs. Except for the mallet-shaped basalt, it also features many uniquely shaped hexagonal honeycomb rocks. In the 1960s, the area was once a military shooting range for the National Army, leaving behind numerous iron fragments and rock debris. Tie Zhan Yu, located northeast of the main island of Penghu, is composed entirely of basalt. Its shape closely resembles a mallet plate, hence the name "Tie Zhan Yu." Due to long-term erosion by winter northeast monsoon waves, a sea cave over ten meters deep has formed on the northern coast of Tie Zhan Yu, making it the largest sea cave in all of Penghu. The cave's unique location prevents direct sunlight from entering even in summer, resulting in an internal temperature about three to five degrees cooler than outside. This has made it a popular spot for tourists to cool off, earning it the nickname "Cool Breeze Cave." From the northern seas, one can clearly see the island's sea cliffs, with basalt forming the upper part and volcanic breccia forming the lower section. Since volcanic breccia is more fragile and prone to winter wave erosion, massive sea caves have formed beneath the northern sea cliffs, large enough for small yachts and fishing boats to enter. The intertidal zone on the island is relatively shallow and short, and little erosion platforms are found near the sea caves. Only about a five-meter-wide platform is found beneath the eastern sea cliff, with tiny gravel beaches on the southern and western sides. As such, few fishermen ascend the island to collect clams and shellfish. Every year, over a thousand White-browed Needletails use the island for nesting. When boats approach the shores, flocks of White-browed Needletails gradually fly from the island and emit low, dog-like warning calls. Eventually, they all gather and circle above the boats, forming a fascinating spectacle.
