The old Chaozhou Post Office is one of the important government buildings from the Japanese colonial period in the Chaozhou area. Its exact construction date is unknown, but it is believed to be around 1897. During the Japanese colonial period, Chaozhou held significant administrative importance, as it was home to the Chaozhou Village Office and the Chaozhou District Office, which are now the site of the current Chaozhou Township Office. Only a small portion of the District Office building remains; the rest has been demolished. The former Chaozhou Village Office later became the Chaozhou Post Office. In recent years, the post office has relocated to a new site, leaving the historic building vacant. Due to the introduction of Western urban planning during the Japanese colonial period, Chaozhou is the only area in Pingtung, aside from Pingtung City, to have had parks and shrines as part of its urban design. However, these shrines and the Malaria Research Institute are no longer visible in modern-day Pingtung, as they have all been demolished. To witness the architectural style of government buildings from the Japanese colonial period, the old Chaozhou Post Office is now the only remaining structure. Its preservation not only offers insight into the historical development of the region but also serves as a testament to the urban development of Chaozhou Township. Since 2011, it has been repurposed as the "Pingtung Opera Story House," giving new life to the historic building.
