In the early hours of August 9, 2009, Typhoon Morak brought strong winds and heavy rain that caused a landslide on Xiandu Mountain, burying Xiaolin Village in Jiaxian District and leaving a devastating impact that shocked the entire nation. To commemorate and remember the 462 residents of Xiaolin Village who were buried, the Kaohsiung City Government established the Xiaolin Village Memorial Park on a hill south of the original site of Xiaolin Village. The park was completed and opened in 2012.
Covering 1.7 hectares, 80% of the park is planned as green space, recreating the image of the former Xiaolin Village. The names of the 462 victims are carved on both sides of a winding path, and 181 saplings of native Taiwanese mountain cherry blossom trees represent the 181 families that were lost. The park also features a memorial plaza, a Xiaolin shrine, a viewing pavilion, and a monument.
The 9‑meter‑tall monument, built from stones that slid down Xiandu Mountain during the storm, symbolizes the strength to give new life and rebuild to the villagers. Viewing the site from the memorial park evokes a deep respect for the relentless power of nature, reminding us to cherish the present and remain humble.
