Xincheng Community, situated within Baoshan Township, Hsinchu County, began as scattered settlements as early as the Qing Dynasty, when the Jin-guang-fu group came to cultivate the Beipu area; it was then called Xincheng Village. Under Japanese rule, the soil around Baoshan proved ideal for growing high-sugar-content bamboo cane, and Xincheng became one of Taiwan’s major sugar-producing centers. Just over a decade ago, vast cane fields still surrounded the village; cane was hauled by handcar to the sugar mill, where it was transformed into sweet, fragrant red-sugar blocks.
