Baxian Cave, located on a cliff facing the sea in Hualien Township, Taitung County, is a site featuring both geological landscapes and a prehistoric cultural heritage. The cliffs naturally form over ten sea-eroded caves. Originally these caves were at sea level, but they now spread across a cliff approximately 150 meters high due to the land uplifting process of the eastern coastal crust which resulted in the wave erosion of relatively soft parts of the cliff. Nowadays a trail leads from Baxian Cave to each of the sea-eroded caves, with the largest being Lingyan Cave; Kunlun Cave, the one highest from the ground at 130 meters, is also in this system. Other caves include Qianyuan Cave, Chaochen Cave, Hailai Cave, Chao Yin Cave, Yong' an Cave, and Shuilian Cave. Because many of the caves have been occupied and used as shrines, most cave names carry religious connotations. Baxian Cave has also proven to be an important prehistoric site, where an exceptionally rich collection of prepottery Neolithic culture, named "Changbin Culture" by archaeologists, was discovered. Currently recognized as the oldest known prehistoric cultural site in Taiwan, it holds profound significance and has been designated as a National First-Class Cultural Heritage.
