The Mountain Theater of Yo-Yo Dance Drum is located on Laokeng Mountain in Laquan Village. It covers more than 1,000 ping (a traditional unit of area), and was established by Liu Ruoyu, the artistic director of Yo-Yo Dance Drum, to practice the "Forest Training Method" of Polish theater master Jerzy Grotowski. The purpose is to get away from the noise of the city, enabling the theater group members to integrate drumming, meditation, and Chinese martial arts. The rehearsal area was built by the group members themselves, using wooden structures and laying sleepers. The Mountain Theater is divided into two parts: one is a wooden house for the members to meditate and practice drumming, which is not open for visit without reservation; the other is an open-air stage and practice area. In addition to being a stage for ticketed performances, it is also open for free visits.
The Mountain Theater of Yo-Yo Dance Drum is the only open-air theater on a mountain in Taiwan. From here, one can look out over the Taipei Basin. On regular days, many hikers come here for hiking and to enjoy the quiet scenery. In 2007, it was approved by the Taipei City Cultural Heritage Review Committee, as it "demonstrates the cultural significance of human-nature interaction," "has commemorative, representative, or special historical, cultural, artistic, or scientific value," "has a sense of the times or social significance," and "is rare." In 2008, it was registered as a cultural landscape.
