Between the Danshui Golf Course and the Hubei Battery, the Cloud Gate Theater overlooks the Guanyin Mountain and the mouth of the Danshui River. The building with its淡 green glass curtain wall reflects the surrounding tall trees, integrating into the tranquil green landscape.
On February 11, 2008, the Cloud Gate rehearsal space, a tin-roof building located in Wushantou, BaLi, was accidentally destroyed by fire, causing years of efforts to be reduced to ashes, which drew nationwide attention.
In April 2009, after passing the strict review of the "Act for Promoting Private Participation in Public Construction," the Cloud Gate Foundation signed a contract with the Taipei County (now New Taipei City) government. Cloud Gate would raise funds on its own to build the Cloud Gate Theater on the 1.5-hectare former site of the Central Broadcasting Station, operating for 40 years. If it performed excellently, it could renew the contract for another 10 years. After the operating period ended, the Cloud Gate Theater would be transferred to the New Taipei City government free of charge.
The board members of the Cloud Gate Foundation started fundraising. By the end of 2013, a total of 4,155 domestic and foreign private donations had been made, making the construction of the Cloud Gate Theater possible.
The Cloud Gate Theater opened on April 24, 2015. The theater complex includes a 450-seat main theater, two rehearsal spaces / small theaters, an outdoor theater that can accommodate 1,500 audience members, and offices and professional theater spaces. This is the workplace for the Cloud Gate Foundation, Cloud Gate Dance Theater, and Cloud Gate 2.
This is the first theater in Taiwan built through private donations, and also the first creative area in the Chinese-speaking world centered on performing arts.
