Toushe is a historical settlement of the Thao people, named because it is the first community within the Thao territory accessible via the Tsuo Shui River. Located in the southwest of modern Fujen Township, it is adjacent to Sun Moon Lake. Toushe Basin is the third largest among several basins in Fujen Township, covering an area of 1.7 square kilometers. The local proverb "Rice from Toushe, Fish from Shuishé" reflects the fertile soil of Toushe Basin, which produces higher quality and yield of rice than other villages, earning its reputation as the "granary of Fujen Township." Abundant rice harvests once led to six large wooden rice mills operating in the area, but due to industrial transition, most have since been abandoned or ceased operations. Only one remains preserved next to the stage of the Sansheng Palace courtyard, witnessing the golden age of rice production in Toushe Basin. Today, local agriculture primarily focuses on planting betel nut and vegetables, serving as Fujen Township's main vegetable production area, especially for sponge gourd. In recent years, the local community development association has encouraged residents to pursue safe agricultural practices, achieving favorable results.
