The Taipei City God Temple, originally an official temple, has now become a foundation and is one of the most well-established public temples in Taiwan. In 1875, the Qing government promoted Danshui Hall to Taipei Prefecture, and Chen Xingju opened the Taipei Prefecture. In 1881, the Taipei Prefecture Office built the Taipei City God Temple at the back of Fǔtái Street, at the intersection of Fǔzhí Street and Beimen Street (between Yanping South Road and Hankou Street in Taipei City). The temple was demolished during the Japanese occupation, and was rebuilt at its current location after Taiwan's retrocession. With convenient transportation and thriving commerce, the temple has become a faith center for nearby residents. Moreover, due to the widespread reverence for the City God, believers come from all over the world. This temple is the largest in Taipei City and is dedicated to the City God. Other deities worshipped include Shakyamuni Buddha, Medicine Buddha, Amitabha, Guanyin Bodhisattva, and Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva, as well as Guan Saint Emperor, Fu Yu Emperor, Wen Chang Emperor, Ji Gong Chan Master, City God Lady, and Fukurokuju. The internal couplets, plaques, glazed tiles, murals, and carvings all follow the principle of "avoiding misfortune and educating people's hearts" and "subtly influencing people's minds", providing spiritual inspiration to believers who come to worship.
