Surrounded by the old city walls of Taocheng, the stone monkey of Chiayi first took shape when a father, worried by his picky, underweight son’s poor appetite, whimsically sculpted his daily pork buns into little pigs. Thus the adorable piglet buns began appearing on family tables across Taiwan, becoming a mother’s edible token of love for her child. Inspired by Chiayi’s historic name—“Peach City”—so called because its eastern, southern, western and northern gates together form a peach, this “Chiayi Le Tao Tao” bun is molded into a peach to embody that image. Nestled inside each peach sits a tiny edible stone monkey, symbolizing Chiayi itself—utterly charming and playful. Recommended souvenir: Chiayi Le Tao Tao.
